Designing and building the future of health

The Global Health Initiative (GHI) supports transformative infrastructure projects aiming to improve access to high-quality health care worldwide. These include the construction and outfitting of three cutting-edge public hospitals in Greece—in Komotini, Thessaloniki, and Sparta—designed by Renzo Piano and the Renzo Piano Building Workshop. Also included are major expansion and renovation efforts at public hospitals in Greece, pediatric cancer and rare disease centers in Spain, and advanced orthopedic surgery and stem cell research hubs in the United States.

In 2017, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) in collaboration with Betaplan embarked on a common vision to create and deliver to the Greek National Health System hospitals for the future. The SNF General Hospitals of Komotini and Sparta, and the SNF University Pediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki will be three, state-of-the-art public hospitals located in underserved healthcare peripheries of Greece providing equitable, universal, and quality medical care for all.
