The basic premise of SNF’s Global Health Initiative (GHI) is that health is our most fundamental resource. Ensuring that children have access to quality medical care is therefore an essential investment in public health and the success of future generations.

In Malawi, a shortage in the number of pediatricians serving the country contributes to tragically lower life expectancy and high rates of infant and child mortality. With support from SNF as part of its Global Health Initiative (GHI), Baylor College of Medicine is working to help increase the number of providers available to serve children.

Since 2005, Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation - Malawi has worked alongside the Malawi Ministry of Health at public health facilities, including in providing HIV treatment and maternal health care services. Building upon its broad success in training health providers around the world, Baylor College of Medicine is supporting capacity-building by working with national and local stakeholders and medical training institutions to operate residency programs in the areas of obstetrics and gynecology, pediatric care, and pediatric surgery in Malawi.

SNF’s grant supports four Malawian pediatric residents in their education and training to become care providers for children across the country. The aim is to help build out a pipeline of pediatricians within the national health system, ultimately helping contribute to sustained improvements in the health and wellbeing of the country’s children.
