As part of its Global Health Initiative (GHI), the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) supported upgrades to the medical equipment in crucial departments at the 251 Hellenic Air Force General Hospital in Athens. The grant, fully implemented by 2023, aimed to maintain the hospital's high level of efficiency while making new services available.
The 251 Hellenic Air Force General Hospital treats more than 200,000 patients each year, in both outpatient and inpatient units. It operates 24/7 and offers services to the public health system.
The grant includes extensive enhancement and replacement of equipment in multiple departments. The Nuclear Medicine Department received a PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography) scanner, building on SNF’s previous grant to the 401 Military Hospital for the purchase of linear accelerators. The Interventional Radiology Department saw significant equipment upgrades, including the addition of a top-of-the-line biplane angiograph, ultrasound machine, anesthesiology tower, and more. The Gastroenterology Department's endoscopic capabilities have been enhanced by the procurement of a high-definition endoscopic tower. Additionally, a new CT system is improving the imaging capabilities of the Maxillofacial Surgery service. The program also includes the installation of a fully integrated chemotherapy drug preparation software system that connects the Oncology Clinic with the hospital pharmacy’s chemotherapy drug preparation facility.
This grant leaves the 251 Hellenic Air Force General Hospital with enhanced capabilities and supports the delivery of efficient and reliable services for the people it treats, both Air Force personnel and civilians.
